Protecting your mattress

Most of our modern mattresses have removable washable exterior fabrics, and our general advice is that a mattress protector is not necessary, as the mattress fabric acts as a hygienic, regularly washable layer. All mattresses benefit from 'breathability' and therefore the more layers you add to your sleep/sheet arrangement, the more breathability is reduced.
However, for more traditional construction mattresses where the outer ticking can not be removed, a mattress protector is always a good idea from both hygiene and longevity perspectives.
