Materials

The essence of Sleep Engineering is to find and utilise those materials that advance the quality of our sleep experience. Whether those materials be from natures finest, or advanced technology, it is the users physical experience that will define them as best in class. The most advanced, the most luxurious, the most fit for purpose.  Innovation is key, but so is recognising that sometimes the wheel does not have to be reinvented in order to excel. What we know is that quality counts and it must go hand in hand with innovation, especially when creating the luxury of sleep.

Use our iconography below to explore and understand the range of materials that we have identified as being the very best for application in the field of Sleep Engineering and the provision of better sleep.

dunlop latex

Dunlop Latex is the long established industry standard for quality latex manufacture. We utlitise it in our pillows because it has very different feel to Talalay Latex, that is through our research, more commonly found to be preferred for pillow use. It is less bouncy, and firmer than Talalay, but provides the support, quick response, and resilience to make it a fantastic material for your 'mattress of the head'. In addition as a material, it is more easily manipulated to allow us to create our signature shapes and designs which accentuate your personal comfort and the uniqueness of our pillows. Dunlop latex is well known for its durability, breathability, and of course that is naturally hypoallergenic, and antimicrobial.

equilibrium

Designed and engineered exclusively for Rested, our signature ‘Equilibrium’ pillow cover blends the elegance of true luxury with advanced technology. We wanted to create a product that can positively improve our clients sleep experience. The result is a direct reflection of our core values: an equilibrium of luxury, technology, and nature, working together for better sleep.
Luxury: The outer fabric is an exceptional combination of the majesty of pure silk and the advanced luxury of Micro Modal. Presented in a unique flowing design, the feel of the cover is sublime against the skin, responding with indulgence and pure pleasure.
Technology: Behind the surface, ‘Equilibrium’ incorporates a woven carbon yarn known as ‘Intense’. It is woven within the fabric and naturally captures and diffuses your body’s daily electrical charge and eliminates static. The diffusion allows your body to reach a neutral electrical equilibrium, in harmony with the earth, that is scientifically linked to a reduction in cortisol and tension, thereby increasing sleep quality, duration, and daily recovery. In addition the pillow is completely anti-static and actively repels dust and bacteria.
Nature: Each Equilibrium pillow is finished with a natural probiotic treatment that eliminates allergens, and prevents the production of bacteria and harmful organisms.

high resilience

The resilience of a foam implies how much pressure is required to compress it, and how fast it bounces back. High Resilience foams require higher pressure to compress and have strong force in their rapid bounce back. As such, they are the perfect material to provide underlying support to mattress structures. By contrast, a visco elastic (memory foam) would be termed low resilience. Where our suppliers utilise HR foams it is generally either in the base layers of mattresses, or combined with other softer foams to create progressive support structures that create the marriage between support and comfort.

hollow fibre

Synthetic hollow fibres are excellent insulators. Designed to trap warm air within their core, they are soft, flexible fibres that deliver the added benefit of being easily washable, and therefore hygienic.
Not all hollow fibres are created equal, and there are substantial differences in the feel and performance depending on quality. Further innovations such as additional holes to the fibre itself can improve airflow, and therefore the ability to trap air. We use the highest quality hollowfibres available to ensure that both performance and luxury are perfectly combined within our quilts. Hollowfibre is a great choice for those that wish for a performance duvet that it is truly hypoallergenic, and can be regularly washed.

honeymoon jersey

The Honeymoon Jersey can be differentiated from a standard Jersey knit as it is a double interlock: a doubled up jersey, with a much finer knit. It has the benefit of greater absorption and an extra fine silky feel, whilst still retaining stretch properties. A Standard Jersey has only one facing side, whereas the Honeymoon Jersey is uniform on both sides. The Honeymoon Jersey is created using 100% finest extra long staple mako cotton, which has been treated by Elegante to add lustre, strength, and to improve the cotton fibres to the absolute finest quality.

hybrid pocket

Principle support and body contouring is provided by the core element of responsive pocket springs. What makes a 'hybrid' is that the pocket springs are sandwiched with various performance materials for additional comfort to your mattress and to add further qualities to your sleep experience. Necessarily you wouldn't sleep on a naked spring, so all pocket sprung mattresses have a top layer of some form. What therefore defines a hybrid is that the top layers are not there to cover the springs, but to introduct a second technology of benefit to your mattress. Much like a hybrid car that uses two sources for power, your mattress combines two (or more) technologies for an optimised sleep experience.

hypoallergenic

There is a lot of terminology banded around regarding the 'allergen' performance of mattresses. What we know is this: dust mites like to live in warm dark places, in moisture filled, closed environments. Latex mattresses afford no such opportunity, and neither do truly ventilated mattresses. Hypo-allergenic means 'less allergen likely than others', which is the truth of the matter and why we use that statement for mattresses to which it applies. In addition to a materials specific properties and the ventilation of mattresses to reduce allergens, most of our mattresses also have removable washable covers, which is a significant step in terms of being able to regularly wash away any dust, skin cells or allergens that are either airborne or may accumulate through your use of the bed.

jersey knit

A woven sheet, such as a classic cotton bedsheet is formed by weaving single individual strands of cotton thread in perpendicular fashion, much like a basket. By contrast, a Jersey knit, is formed with a continuous thread, knitted together in interlocking loops. The principle difference is that the 'knit' gives the cotton fabric 'stretch'. For our purposes, when analysing fitted sheets where the purpose is to obtain a perfect 'mattress hugging' fit, that requires no ironing, and stretches to conform to your body when lying on it (and always bounces back), it simply has to be Jersey. The only question that remained thereafter, is who makes the best?

lyocell

Lyocell is a botanic fibre derived from tree pulp. We use it because it has 50% more moisture absorption than cotton. It is moisture and humidity that are the principle factors in temperature control, hence Lyocell takes moisture away from you keeping you both dry and cool. In its finest forms, Lyocell is produced with a truly silken feel. This is because under a microscope, Lyocell fibres are completely smooth, unlike Cotton. It has a luxurious, beautiful, smooth finish that is kind to your skin, and yet is also completely washable. Our unique 100% Lyocell Gold quilt covers are a true pleasure with advanced performance.

memory foam

Visco-elastic, 'memory foam' is well known for its pressure reduction and cushioning effects. It comforts and envelopes, moulds and conforms, making it a unique and wonderful material for the bedroom environment. New generation memory foams have addressed previous issues of lack of ventilation, and heat retention, so that the benefits can be accessed without the negatives. The skill of incorporating memory foam into sleep products is something that comes from experience, and there is great technicality as to the different types, densities, response rates, and function. We work with the best in the industry to ensure that our memory foams are best in class and have been utilised for performance and quality rather than marketing and words.

merino wool

Natural, sustainable, thermo regulating. Merino Wool is regarded as the highest tier of 'wool' due to its finesse and crimping. Capable of absorbing 35% of its own weight in moisture, it has the ability to keep you at just the right temperature throughout the night. Microscopic cuticles open and close to regulate moisture and temperature. It is naturally resistant to dust mites, mould and mildew. Wool is a product that excels in all aspects, and we have carefully selected our Merino wool to create duvets that perform and feel soft and supple with excellent drape.

natural coconut

Natural Coconut fibres (coir) are combined with natural rubber to create springy sheets of fully breathable coconut matt. Used in conjunction with Talalay latex in a mattress, it adds structure and support, whilst retaining elasticity and flexibility. A natural pressure distribution layer. Coconut coir was designed by nature to regulate moisture and temperature, and to protect the coconut when it falls. That natural science now forms the basis for its inclusion as an important feature within the Dual Comfort mattress by Hollandia.

outlast temp regulating

Outlast is patented 'Certified Space Technology™'. It utilises encapsulated 'Thermolecules' to absorb your body heat, in what is a known as 'phase change material'. In doing so, it reduces your bodies natural response to heat - to sweat, and rather than wicking it away, it takes heat away from the skin surface to address sweating and therefore moisture build up before it occurs. Thereafter, the phase change thermolecues release the heat when your body temperature drops. The result is less sweating, less moisture, and a smoothed median night time temperature, that adapts to the individual underneath it. A true Sleep Engineering solution that we are delighted to present in our most premium quilts.

Thread

Thread Count is a measure of the number of threads per square inch. Notoriously complicated by the difference between multi-ply yarn and single yarn cottons, length of staple, type of weave, and lack of international standard. Our perspective is that different thread counts create different 'feels' to the cotton that relate to your comfort preference. We work with the highest quality suppliers of finest single ply long staple cottons, and thus the thread count across our range can be more accurately determined by feel. The greater the thread count, the more dense the weave, and therefore the heavier, and more substantial the sheet becomes. We will not state that greater thread count is 'better', as it depends on the feel that you personally appreciate in a sheet. We recommend the higher thread counts to those that want a feel of traditional luxury; a sheet with weight and substance. We recommend the lower thread counts if you prefer a more breathable lightweight feel to your linens.
